Jordan Clary shares her experience of arriving in Haikou and, on the trip to her new home, she encountered her first water buffalo:

As we pulled onto the highway, I stared out the window at neon-green rice paddies. Men and women in cone hats pedaled their bicycles with baskets of chickens or produce tied on behind them. Motorcycles zoomed by. Then on the side of the road I saw an old man walking a water buffalo. Its huge head lolled back and forth like a piano with horns as it plodded along the side of the highway. I pressed my face against the window. A water buffalo there in all its fleshy glory. More than anything else, this let me know I was really in China.
