There are a number of books, short stories, and essays that are in the public domain that give an idea of what the life was like in times past. Some give a view of the traveling life, others are written by expats living outside of their comfort zone. A Room With A View: This novel by E.M. Forster tells the Edwardian love story of Lucy Honeychurch and George Emerson, who met at the Pensione Bertolini in Florence ... it's a classic and one of our favorites!
L'Oeuvre: His Masterpiece: Emile Zola wrote twenty books about life in Paris during the mid-late 19th century which were called the Rougon-Macquart Series. L'Oeuvre is the fifteenth novel in that series and the writer used his familiarity, based on his childhood friendship, with the painter Cezanne to create the main character Claude.
